This Jacob is not the Jacob who married Elinor Cox!

Jacob Bankston, son of Lawrence and Rebecca (Hendericks) Bankston born in York, Pa., abt. 1740, died in Louisiana, abt. 1823; married Jemima [Unknown]. He later married Nancy Brewer (Brown?) 1n 1809 with whom he had 2 daughters.

Jacob Bankston lived in Philadelphia, Pa. He and family about 1758 removed to N. Carolina where his father Lawrence Bankston had previously moved 1744. They lived in N.C. until just before the Revolutionary War then moved to Wilkes Co., Ga., where he enlisted in the Georgia Continental Battalion, and was in the service until the close of the war. The state of Georgia after the Revolutionary War was undergoing many changes in Government. New counties were being formed and Jacob Bankston with other Bankstons were active in State Affairs. His residence was changed to Clarke County, Georgia where he lived to an old age and was prominent and influential in the community leaving a long line of descendants in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Louisiana, many of whom were prominent and influential in the states they lived. The Georgia Bankstons were active in the War of 1812, participating in the Battle of New Orleans under General and future President Andrew Jackson. See ref. from Ruth McConigly, op. cit.

Lawrence and Rebecca did have a son, Jacob, but he was their youngest son (NC court records prove that) and by estimating when his 5 older siblings were born, this Jacob was probably born ca 1740 or a bit later. Evidently he is the one who married (we assume, first) Jemima [--?--] and Nancy Brewer (secondly in 1809), was a Baptist minister, and lived in Georgia before removing ca 1817 to the Mississippi Territory where he died ca 1823 in Louisiana.

With this Jacob's probably birthdate calculated as ca 1740, it is not likely that he was the father at age 14 of twins, John and Judith, born 11 June 1754 as reported in some of the older published genealogies, which have been picked up and included in many online genealogies. And, no credible evidence has been found that supports him being the father of a Jacob Bankston Jr., born 1760 (whose existence has not been proven) or father of an Elinor Bankston, born ca 1758.

He was the father of Revolutionary soldier Elijah Bankston, born ca 1765, and probably the father of a Henry, and of Araminta Bankston who married Absalom AWTREY in 1800 (their family Bible) and probably the father of an unplaced John Bankston, born in the 1760s. There may be others. He had two daughters by Nancy Brewer. http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bankston/244.3/mb.ashx
