Estimated Marriage date of Isaac Mabry and Lucy (Unknown) Rutledge

Isaac Mabry married Lucy, the widow of William Rutledge, Sr. of North Carolina, prior to 21 August 1754, most likely in Granville County, North Carolina. The following records prove this relationship:

  • In 1740 James and Lewis Brantly sold 100 acres on Peahill Creek and the Roanoke River in Bertie County, NC to William Rutledge (this land fell into Northampton Co the following year).
  • 21 August 1754 - Northampton County Deed Book 2, p. 193: Isaac and Lucy Mabry of Granville County, NC, sold the same 100 acres in Northampton County "on north side of Roanoke River where William Rutledge, dec'd. lived" to William Rutledge, Jr. (Apparently William Rutledge, Sr. died leaving the land to his widow, Lucy, who then married Isaac Mabry. Isaac and Lucy Mabry then sold the land to her son, William Rutledge, Jr.).

Information on Isaac Mabry and Lucy Unknown

The only proven son of Isaac Mabry was Charles. The other chidren listed as suspected as children of Isaac and Lucy (unknown), but more research is needed to prove this relationship. Please provide sources with any updates.

The following is an e-mail from Donald E. Collins, author of the book on the Francis Mabry genealogy:

Hi Jim,

Just last week I hired a professional genealogist in western NC to search for additional records of William Mabry who was in Buncombe County before moving to Roane Co. TN. She has a waiting list so it may be a while before I hear from her but I'm hoping she can come up with something. There is a record in Buncombe County by which an Isaac Mayberry sold 50 acres to Andrew Irwin on August 1, 1797. I doubt that this was Isaac3 who had long since moved to Virginia, but it is possible he had land in NC. Buncombe Co was created from Burke and Rutherford Counties in 1791 and since Burke was created from old Rowan County where Isaac lived, it is possible that it is the same Isaac.

We have no idea how many children Isaac3 Mabry had. The only one known for sure is Charles4. But there is a tradition in that family that Charles had two brothers, one of whom was John. I'm pretty sure that this would be the John who went to TN and m. Eliza Brock. There was an Isaac Mabry also in Anderson Co TN who is almost certainly a brother of John. Both could have been sons of Isaac3, as could William.
