The parents of Peter and Hugh were Hugh Donnelly and Margaret [--?--], according to Hugh's death certificate in the New Jersey State Archives. It has not been determined whether they stayed in Ireland or came to America. They do not appear in the 1830 Belleville, New Jersey Census, while Peter does appear. Hugh does not appear, but he may be one of the ten males age 20-30 or eleven males age 30-40 living with Henry McLaughlin, since Hugh's wife is Ellen McLaughlin. Hugh and Peter settled in what is now the Soho section of Belleville. When they settled there, however, this area, which was originally the Second River section of Newark, was in the area set off as Bloomfield in 1812, from which the Town of Belleville was set off in 1839. In 1870, they were living in the short-lived town of Woodside, which took in all of the area between the old gulley road at the north end of Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark and the Second River, which forms the boundary between Belleville and Newark. All of this presumably with no change of residence.
