From the essay written by Otto and Emil Hirzel for the Alexander Hirzel-Studer Family Reunion around 1958:

"Through the account of the ownership of Keficon Castle by the family of Hans Kaspar Hirzel of Zurich, SwitzerIand, his son and grandson, from 1650 to 1740, by John C. Schoop in his Castles of Switzeriand, the founding of that family, the original name as documented by them in the year 1318, the subsequent evolving of four branches and one side-line-we are able to draw comparisons and reasonable conclusions, mainly as to the original name, and we also know more of the family history in general in the light of Public Service. The original name as Huerzel and Hurtzel was carried by both branches, the Zurich and Bernese. The present form of the name of Hirzel in Zurich was not only used by the owners of Keficon in 1650, but appears already in a war action of the Zurich forces in 1442 on the Hirzel, an Eminence in the southern part ofthe Canton and the founding of the Town of Hirzel, seat of the County of the same name. As to the exact time the Bernese Branch settled in that Canton of Bern, Switzerland, we cannot ascertain beyond the year 1628 at which date the wedding of Hans Huertzel and Magdalena Blaser is documented in the Church Registery of the Community of Dieterswyl-Rapperswyl, County of Aarberg, Canton Bern, where the family is entitled to all the privileges as Burghers of that community and Canton. Besides the recordings of Birth, Marriage and Death, we know but little of the life of our first known ancestors in the Canton of Bern."
