When the news of the surrender of Fort Sumter reached McArthur, George Dunkle, Ashbel Fenton & H.C. Jones raised a regiment of volunteers. George went in as a 1st Lt. and served in the war until he was brought home sick in 1863. He died in Vinton County the same year.

In Hanging Rock Iron Region, pg. 612: A George W. Dunkle and two other men recruited "squads" of men, which made a company. These men were mostly from Swan, Brown and Elk townships. The company organized August 12, 1861, by electing Ashbel Fenton, captain, George W. Dunkle, first lieutenant and H.C. Jones, second lieutenant.

Nancy Jane Dearth Pilcher, wife of George Dunkle files his will for probate in Vinton Co. - Will recorded in Vinton Co. Will Book Vol. 1, page 112, signed 26 May 1863, recorded 24 Jun 1863 - names brothers, James and Columbus B. and wife, Nancy. Nancy Jane Dunkle, signed as Nancy J. Dunkle, named as executrix - Benson Dunkle and James Milhose or Milhon (?) named as her securities
