Children
The conventional view, as represented by William R. Cutter[3] [4], is that Ebenezer had a first wife named Hannah Cutter who had one child and died. All this is derived from the birth record of that child and Ebenezer being listed with a wife named Ruth in 1725. No marriage or death record is found, nor are dates for these events mentioned by the sources covering this family. However, the wording of the birth record[1] for the daughter Elizabeth is such that Ebenezer and Hannah do not appear to be married (the child is described as the daughter of Ebenezer Chenery and Hannah Cutter, not say, Ebenezer Chenery and Hannah (Cutter) his wife, or something similar).
William Cutter's father, Benjamin, at least is willing to hint that the marriage might not have happened[5], though he doesn't come out and say it. He also correctly identifies Hannah's parents, since William incorrectly identifies Hannah as a daughter of her brother who married 13 years after Hannah was born.
An inspection of the church records[2] makes it strongly appear that there was no marriage. In 1727 Hannah, apparently, though under the name Cutler, confesses "her sin" and two weeks later baptizes her daughter Elizabeth, the same name as the child whose birth record is responsible for the assumption of the marriage.
