Family:Donald Buchanan and Flora Beaton (1)

Though she does not show up in the Census, there was another girl in the family according to the family lore:

Margaret’s mother had died in childbirth. She had given birth to twin girls, Margaret and Janie, but died following childbirth complications a few hours later. What should have been a joyous celebration turned into an extremely sad and distressing event. Everyone was heartbroken and many tears were shed. Margaret and Janie were the twin daughters of Donald Buchanan’s brother Murdock. What made the death of Murdock’s wife so sad was that in addition to his newly born twin daughters he already had five young children to look after and bring up. How could he possibly look after seven children and work as well? It’s at times like this when families rally together to help the less fortunate. It was decided that Donald and Flora should adopt Margaret and bring her up as one of the family. The remaining children were adopted by various members of the Buchanan family and the deceased mother’s family. When Margaret came to live with the Buchanan family in O’Leary, Annie was four years old. [about 1893]
