  1. It appears David and Lois never married. The birth record, calling son Horatio "s. of Lowes Clap" suggests Horatio is illegitmate. It names no father, and Lois still has her maiden name. The identity of his father comes from the guardian file cited on Horatio's page.

The Whitney Research Group says father David died bef. 1815 because of the guardian file for Horatio. However, the probate file is initiated by a request in 1814 by Horatio because he has turned 14 and is now able to chose his guardian instead of "belonging to the town of Watertown" as his current situation was described. Further, Source:Pierce, Frederick Clifton. Whitney: The Descendants of John Whitney, p. 140, says David d. Scottsville, NY, in 1854. Thus the interpretation of the probate file to mean that the father David died is probably not correct. Being a town charge is likely to be the reason why a guardianship is needed.

No record of the marriage of David Whitney and Lois Clapp is found, nor any subsequent children, nor the death of Lois Whitney, nor David Whitney. There is no mention of Lois Clapp in Pierce, and there is no mention of any David Whitney in Source:Clapp, Ebenezer. Clapp Memorial : Record of the Clapp Family in America, Containing Sketches of the Original Six Emigrants, and a Genealogy of Their. Lois is never identified in any of the coverages showing David and Lois married. There are two Lois Clapps of an appropriate age covered in the Clapp Memorial (#58 on p. 216 m. 1799 Phineas Peabody; #461 on p. 150 m. 1802 John Smith), and clearly without any information about Horatio's mother besides her name, there is no chance of telling if it might be one of them, though the John Smith marriage occurs in Boston, where the birth of Horatio is said to have occurred.
