Wisconsin Historical SocietyEight statewide genealogy and history databases can be searched online, including 2.4 million pre-1907 vital records and tens of thousands of obituaries and biographies. In some cases it helps to know the county of residence, but it's not essential. Some original copies can be seen on line free; most require ordering and payment.

Post-1907 vital records are another matter. Consult Wisconsin Vital Recordsfor up-to-date rules, schedules, and fees for researching original records on site in Madison. There is a several months' waiting list for appointments, so plan ahead. (N.B. Vital records may be more easily available locally.)
