WeRelate:Suggestions/View the talk page - suppress when empty

If there was ever any text on the Talk page, the link "View the talk page" is displayed at the top of the main page. It would be nice if this link was suppressed if all text on the Talk page has been removed.

In particular, nomerge templates have been inappropriately added at times, and later removed so that pages could be merged, and the "View the talk page" still shows up on the merged page even though there is nothing to see. This can be particularly annoying in the middle of a complex merge session impacting several pages, when it can be hard to keep track of changes made and changes outstanding, and the careful user wants to ensure that all discussions are taken into account.--DataAnalyst 20:02, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

I am not sure, but I believe this is done to keep the history of the talk page, though the fact one is given the choice of merging the talk page or not in a merge, suggests preservation of the history may not all that important? I am very favorable to this idea, or at least to changing the display of the Talk page message on the principal page: i.e., suppress message altogether if empty, plain black text if not empty but no edits since last visited, and bold black (or other color) text if changes since you last looked at it? --Jrich 20:27, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
The history of the Talk page is still there. If it happens to be on the page that was redirected in the merge, it takes several clicks to get there, but you can still see it. For example, here is the history of a Talk page that was redirected during a merge: Family talk: William Norris and Unknown (1). The Talk page it was merged with has no history and is blank, but is still referenced on the main page (blue "View the talk page" link).
There is a check box during merge of a page that has an existing Talk page which you can select to merge the associated talk page. I always do, but assume if you uncheck it, the Talk page will simply disappear, history and all. --Jrich 00:30, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Could you give an example? Thanks AndrewRT 22:34, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
