WeRelate:Suggestions/Consistency in titles when merging

When merging pages, the radio button beneath the page links indicates which spelling will be used for each page. However, there is no consistency between the default spellings chosen for Family pages and Person pages. For example, during a recent merge, the radio buttons defaulted to those marked in bold below:

Dirk Van Der Mark and Bregtje Idzes (1)Dirk Van Der Merk and Bregtje Idzes (1)
Dirk Van Der Merk (2)Dirk Van Der Mark (5)
Bregtje Idzes (2)Bregtje Idzes (1)

This would cause the family page to be titled as Merk, but the person page to be titled as Mark. Another part of the problem is that the screen after pressing "Prepare to Merge" has no instructions about the use of the radio buttons to choose another spelling. I think making that clearer, along with consistency in the default choices would help. --Jennifer (JBS66) 20:13, 27 June 2011 (EDT)

I believe that the checked radios buttons for the people correspond to the members of the target family. I could add better instructions (and will), but I think this is part of a larger issue: when you change someone's name, it doesn't also rename the page. I think another, more important thing, is to either automatically rename the page when you change someone's name, or else prompt the user to rename the page when the person's name doesn't match the page title.--Dallan 23:27, 28 June 2011 (EDT)
A prompt would be useful.--GayelKnott 13:59, 29 June 2011 (EDT)
I think these are two separate issues. Yes, I agree a prompt would be helpful when a person changes the primary name on a page. It would also need to alert the user to rename both the Person and Family pages.
In this case, what I think is confusing is that the default values would have caused different spellings for the Person and Family page titles. This didn't occur because somebody changed someone's name. These were two duplicate families (with both spellings being recorded in his lifetime), a merge was processed, but the titles for the target family were inconsistent. Perhaps just clearer instructions on the page will help. btw, I see the old instructions have been removed and replaced with a Help link. I think the important details need to remain on the merge page itself. --Jennifer (JBS66) 14:37, 30 June 2011 (EDT)
I've added prompts to rename pages when the page title is different from the primary name, and I've made the instructions that appear on the left-hand side of the Compare and Merge screens editable by admins: MediaWiki:CompareHelp and MediaWiki:MergeHelp.--Dallan 13:38, 1 July 2011 (EDT)
I don't see the instructions appearing on the Compare and Merge Screens. I have a link that says help, but get an error message when I click on it "Not Found: The requested URL /w//wiki/Help:Merging_pages was not found on this server." --Jennifer (JBS66) 13:54, 1 July 2011 (EDT)
I fixed the link. If you want to fill in instructions to appear on those pages, you can edit MediaWiki:CompareHelp and MediaWiki:MergeHelp.--Dallan 14:06, 1 July 2011 (EDT)
I see how that works now. Ok, I'll add instructions to the page next week, thanks. --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:24, 1 July 2011 (EDT)

The new prompt is appearing when the only difference between the page title and preferred name is capitalization. For example Family:Siete Van Der Ploeg and Grietje Van Der Meulen (1). I don't think the alert show appear on these pages. Also, is it possible to search for the text "This page needs to be renamed"? It is not currently appearing in searches. --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:17, 2 July 2011 (EDT)

I'll omit the prompt when the only difference is capitalization. It doesn't show up during searches. I could add it...--Dallan 10:13, 3 July 2011 (EDT)
Marking complete unless I hear otherwise.--Dallan 19:42, 9 September 2011 (EDT)
