WeRelate:Family Tree Explorer

Note: This page is out of date. Please see Help:My Trees for current information.

The Family Tree Explorer (FTE) is a flash application that makes it easy to create and navigate family trees.

Getting started

If you have not opened a tree before, you will be asked if you want to Create a new tree or Open an existing tree.

  1. If you have already created pages in WeRelate for some of your ancestors, click on Open an existing tree. This gives you a chance to open your tree (probably called "Default"), which contain the pages you created.
  2. If you have not created any pages for your ancestors yet, click on Create a new tree. You will be asked to enter the name of the tree. You will then be asked if you have a GEDCOM file to import.
  • If you answer Yes, you'll be taken to a screen where you can select the GEDCOM file to import. See Help:GEDCOM for more information.
  • If you answer No, you will be directed to select Family from the Add menu at the top of the screen. From here you can begin adding pages for your deceased relatives.

Adding people and families

To add additional people or families to your tree, first click on a person or family already in your tree to which they are related. Click on the Edit link from the menu on the Left to edit the page. Next click on the "find/add" links as appropriate to link the existing person or family to the new person or family. Save the page.

Additional step-by step instructions for using the Family Tree Explorer can be found in the FTE tutorial.

Features

  • Automatically generate your family tree by uploading a GEDCOM file.
  • Simultaneously view ancestors and descendants in a format that displays as many generations as you want.
  • View all of the pages in your tree in an index list that can be filtered in a variety of ways.
  • Bookmark key pages so that you can return to them quickly.
  • Keyword search over all pages in your tree.
  • Set up multiple trees for different family lines.
  • Record/edit LDS ordinance information.

System requirements

The Family Tree Explorer requires the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player. The player can be downloaded free of charge here. The FTE also requires that you have not disabled javascript in your browser. If your system can't run Adobe Flash Player (most systems can), you can still create person and family pages. See the Person pages tutorial for more information.
