The Vermont Historical Society's library, located on the second floor of the former Spaulding Graded School in Barre, has a useful online presence [1]. But that's not nearly as good as being there. Visitors should know that the bulk of its collection is not even indexed online, but in a head-high bank of card catalogs -- embracing books, manuscripts, pamphlets, and periodicals. Manuscripts are indexed by an idiosyncratic two-step process. If you have research targets in Vermont, it's well worth learning the system from the congenial and knowledgeable staff. --Hh219 16:01, 11 September 2007 (EDT) |
