Hi George,

I accidentally came across Amos B. Lowe & his wife Sarah Jane Kemp today (Nov. 23/09) & started looking into them. I found your database & see that you are a descendant of this couple. I tried e-mailing you at the address you have on your Family Tree page but it doesn't work so I'm hoping to contact you this way.

I have my Kemp database posted on Rootsweb & someone added a post-it note today to a female I have in my database; namely, Sophronia Jane Lowe. All I had down was her name (no birth date or parentage) & also the name of her husband, Robert Chatten, but I hadn't expanded on this. I was only interested in their names because they were the parents of Ethel Phoebe Chatten who married Edwin Bingham Kemp.

The person who did the post-it said Sophronia Jane Lowe's parents were Charles Cunningham Lowe & Rachel Lawson. I decided to double check this & found out this information is incorrect. I found Sophronia Jane Chatten's death register & her parents were clearly listed as "Amos Bull & Sarah Jane Kemp"--which certainly caught my attention.

My maiden name is Kemp & I live in Ontario. I started researching my Kemp family about 33 years ago. My Kemps had been living in the Schenectady, NY, area & had fought for the British during the American Revolution. John Kemp Sr. (born abt 1723) married Anna Van Vorst in Schenectady & John Kemp Sr. , along with his sons Joseph, James & John Jr. (plus a step-son from Anna's first marriage) all joined up fighting for the King's Rangers.

When the British lost the war, this Kemp family left the Schenectady area & moved to Ontario, Canada, in 1784, where they were granted free land for their loyalty to England. I am descended from John Kemp Sr. & Anna's oldest son, Joseph. My main research has been finding the descendants of this original Kemp family. My Kemps were called "United Empire Loyalists" because they remained loyal to the British King. In the States, on the opposite side of the coin, are "Sons & Daughters" of the American Revolution.

I couldn't place your Sarah Jane Kemp amongst my early Kemps; however, Sarah J. was born in Prince Edward County, Ontario, about 1825, so she was born in the same area where my Kemps had lived. Amos Bull was also born in Prince Edward County. The latter fact is stated on Sophronia's death register & it's also on Amos' death register that he was born there.

Added to that, Sarah Jane & Amos Lowe had left Prince Edward County & moved to Northumberland County which is just above Prince Edward County. My direct branch of the Kemps also left Prince Edward County & moved to Northumberland County in the 1840s, settling in Percy Township. Amos & Sarah Jane Lowe lived in Percy Township & were shown there on the 1861 & 1871 Census. In fact, my branch of the Kemps were listed on the 1861 Census on the exact same page as Amos & Sarah Jane Lowe.

In addition, this branch of the Kemps had one daughter that I can't account for. I know she existed because it stated there were two daughters for this family in an obituary but I only knew of one of them. I figured the missing daughter had married before the 1852 Census so that is why I didn't find her listed with the Kemps.

On the 1861 Census for Amos B. Lowe & Sarah J., it said this couple had married during the year 1842 which sounds about right since their daughter Mary Jane was born about 1843/4.

Now here's where it gets interesting. Between 1871 & 1874, the Lowe family moved to Dummer Township, Peterborough County. On the 1881 Ontario Census, Amos was listed in Dummer Township, Peterborough County; however, this time his wife was listed as what looks like "Letitia", age 59.

Had Sarah Jane died & did Amos remarry? If so, I couldn't find a marriage register. I also didn't find a death register for Sarah J. And, as you know, Amos died the following year, in 1882.

I'm sending the address of a site which shows the Counties & Townships of Ontario. If you click on #29 you see Prince Edward County where Amos & Sarah Jane were born; at the top of this county there's a strip of land that you'll see in the upper left corner of the map; this land borders on Northumberland County & Murray Township. Go back to the main page & click on # 27 & you'll see Northumberland County. Murray Township is on the lower right of the map, Percy Township is further north. Above Northumberland County is Peterborough County. If you go back to the main page again, click on #26 to see Peterborough County & Dummer Township. http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/SearchMapframes.php

What I'm hoping is that Sarah Jane Kemp Lowe was the daughter of John Kemp & Eleanor Marton; the grandaughter of Joseph Kemp & Catherine Bovee; & the gr-grandaughter of John Kemp and Anna Van Vorst. Following is the url for John Kemp & Eleanor Marton & you'll see the "missing" daughter I've listed. As I said, John & Eleanor Kemp were listed on the same page on the 1861 Census as Amos & Sarah J. Lowe so this seems a good fit. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cdn-kemp&id=I881

I am descended from John & Eleanor's eldest son, Joseph so if this turns out, you & I are half-assed cousins ;-)
