Naming photographs [19 September 2007]

Hello,

I'm Mary, one of the volunteer administrators for WeRelate. I noticed that you have a photo uploaded that is named "Grandad.jpg." I wanted to give you a heads-up that the next person who uploads a photo also named "Grandad.jpg" will overwrite your photo. There is information about naming photographs below to prevent this from happening to you. I would suggest that you upload this photo again with a different and more unique name.

Thanks for using WeRelate! Mary--Kittydoc 18:43, 19 September 2007 (EDT)

Enter a very descriptive filename in the Destination filename field to prevent it from being overwritten. If someone saves an image with the same filename as your image, the latter will overwrite the former. In other words, if you name a file after your grandfather, "Daniel Phillips.jpg", and your cousin posts another picture of Daniel by the same filename, hers/his file will be saved in the place of yours, and yours will be lost from the system. Here are a few tips for choosing a unique filename:

   * You could include not only the name(s) of the person(s), but also the location, date, and/or type of image, followed by ".jpg" (note the (".") dot). For example: "Daniel Phillips and Ella Grey at the ranch, 1917.jpg".
   * Alternatively, you could label the image with the associated WeRelate person or family page title(s), including the person or family index number(s), and the Image ID number, followed by ".jpg". For instance, you could label the image "Daniel Phillips and Ella Grey (1) ID3.jpg", associating the family page named "Daniel Phillips and Ella Grey (1)", with the image, linked on the page with the Image ID number "3".

MANN TREE 18OCT07 appears to overlap a previously-imported GEDCOM [18 October 2007]

The pages from this GEDCOM have not yet been generated because they appear to match pages from a GEDCOM you have previously imported to WeRelate.

If you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM and you want to replace that tree with this GEDCOM, you need to delete that tree first so duplicates aren't created when you import this GEDCOM. Go to the Family Tree page, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the "delete" link next to that tree. Please be aware that any pages in that tree that are being watched by others won't get deleted. Once that tree is deleted you can create a new tree and re-upload this GEDCOM into it. (We're planning to make re-uploading GEDCOM files much simpler later this Fall.)

If you don't think you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM, or if the two GEDCOM's don't overlap that much, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org and we'll go ahead with the import.

Error importing MANN TREE 18OCT07 [18 October 2007]

We had an error while attempting to import your GEDCOM. This is most likely our fault. We will review the error and should have your pages ready tomorrow (or Monday if tomorrow falls on a weekend). There is no need to re-import your GEDCOM file.

For questions or problems, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org.
