place pages [8 April 2008]

Hi, I am an admin for WeRelate, it's my job to check edits and help people. We really appreciate your contributions to the place index. This is a community effort. It's very helpful when people add research and historical information to the index. Some of the new pages were duplicates to existing pages, so I redirected them.

Just FYI, if you type the name of the town or county followed by a comma in the place field and wait a few moments, you will see a drop down list of all the places in the world with that name. Page down through the list to see if a place page already exists. If a place used to be called by that name but is now called by a new name, it will appear at the top of the list by its new name.

If your place is not on the list, you will need to add a new place page. Place pages are titled with the smallest jurisdiction followed by a comma, then the containing jurisdiction followed by a comma, and so on, eventually ending with the country name. The system treats the last name as the country's name and indexes the place page in that country. So a page ending in the word "Ontario" is indexed in the country of "Ontario" not "Canada." Hope this helps.

Again thanks for participating and adding what you know to the knowledge base. If you have any questions or comments, please leave me a message.--sq 20:41, 8 April 2008 (EDT)

Alterations to Oro, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada [18 August 2012]

Hello

I just arrived at Oro and found your contributions. Other that adjusting the spacing I have not changed anything, but you may find some of your entries harder to find than when there was nothing else on the page.

I have been working though the Ontario "Places" pages in WR, aiming to introduce each place on the "little" <smile> list with its location (coordinates produce Google map) and a brief explanation of its relationship to other places in the vicinity, some history (for which I usually have to depend on Wikipedia), and some Research Tips. For the most part I use templates that are either held within WR or on Sticky Notes at the side of my computer screen.

We have both found Wayne Cook's website on Simcoe County and may have duplicate references because of it. I wish all county GenWeb sites were as good as this one. I have hardly used Wikipedia in Simcoe.

Have you thought of making a separate page for each of the cemeteries? It is permitted and it may allow you to make comments more easily than on the township page. To assist all those Americans out there I suggest writing "concession" in full and perhaps adding the coordinates if you can find them.

I had a read of your blog. I too enjoy 19th-century genealogy. Have you given your thesis a name?
