Thanks for the Benedict Help [29 December 2008]

Jim,

Thanks for the messages about the Benedicts.

I'm volunteering at werelate.org on the massive merge-duplicates project.

The Benedict family you contacted me about had several dupes throughout the system, and I've been spending the afternoon trying to clean up the dupes.

I noticed that there were some discrepancies, and your message is perfectly timed.

I'll keep working on the Benedicts this evening and see if I can clean it up further.

I think I've got it all. If you'd care to review what I've done, I'd appreciate a second pair of eyes, especially from someone more familiar with the data.
The BENEDICT Topics site is great, but I sure wish he'd include his source information. Without it, his site isn't much better than the other sites he rails against. That said, I'm choosing to believe him. jillaine 18:33, 28 December 2008 (EST)

The information on Robert Benedict's site is correct and there are citations; it's just that he is restricted from publishing them. An explanation. Another researcher, Larue Olsen, did a research study on the Benedict line of England, including the locations of original birth/marriage/death certificates and wills over in the old country. She then published her paper in a distinquished booklet, the December 2006 issue of The Nutmegger, the official journal of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists. Larue herself is a professional genealogist.

She did release a summary of her results on the Rootsweb mailing list (see http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/BENEDICT/2007-02/1170384220 for some of the threads) and allowed Bob to use some of her material on his website so all Benedict researchers could access the information for internal use. But she does have copyright to the material and does not allow use of the information on personal websites. That is why my website does not have it. I see today that the information has been totally removed from Bob's site and that the contents of her messages on the Rootsweb mail list have also been purged. I respect Ms. Olsen's copyright but at least I have seen the Nutmegger article and it is well researched.

I visited both the listserv archive and Bob's site this evening and I saw all the info in both places. I copied over dates; I summarized other findings and I referenced Bob's and Larue's work. I haven't seen her prose. It's a pity that the citation information is restricted to a copyrighted article that is not even available to the public for review. Especially when the research done does so much to clear up-- especially in this case-- a huge mess of bad data. jillaine 23:17, 28 December 2008 (EST)

On a note, you can share some of the information by copyright law, which includes names, dates, locations, relations (get those from Bob's site). Anything that would be public knowledge of the day. What we are not allowed to do is to copy her prose. If you want something for a citation, refer to The Nutmegger, Volume 39, number 3, page 353, December 2006, published by Connecticut Society of Genealogists. Inc. Article title is The English Origins of the First Thomas Benedict of Long Island and Norwalk, Connecticut. Information on the Nutmegger itself is at: http://www.csginc.org/csg_publications_nutmegger.php.

Hopefully that helps you to understand the situation. Jim--JimBenedict 22:05, 28 December 2008 (EST)

On a separate note, why is Elwyn mad at Bob? jillaine 23:17, 28 December 2008 (EST)

Glad you are getting this sorted out. On the Elwyn-Bob situation; as far as I am concerned, this is more perception then a reality. I have met with both separately and neither one has an issue with the other. But I think Elwyn just stopped corresponding with Bob at some point and it may have been taken the wrong way, but please don't quote me. Both are fine gentlemen and have made tremendous contributions to the Benedict research.--JimBenedict 23:52, 28 December 2008 (EST)
