WeRelate policy on using abbreviations for placenames [16 April 2024]

It is the policy of the website organizers that placenames should not be abbreviated and that all placenames must include the country in which the place is located. We have a gazetteers of accepted placenames and a search facility which will suggest the one you want as soon as you insert the first comma. The suggestions come up in yellow just below the placename box. If you click on the suggestion you won't have to type the rest of the name. After the name comes up, tab to the next box.

Placenames do not include churches, chapels, street addresses, and, in most cases, hamlets within a township or parish. If you want to add a hamlet's name, put it the third box which is meant for descriptions.

We consider baptisms and christenings to be synonomous. Notes about burials should go in the line marked "Burial". The software will report a burial date and place if there is no data for the death itself.

I have made quite a lot of placename alterations to your people who inhabited "Wyke", a township that is now incorporated into Bradford. If you should be adding any more people, please remember that, as well as Wyke in the West Riding of Yorkshire, there is also a place named "Wike" which is now in Leeds (also in the West Riding).
