I'm a second=generation Californian, whose family came from North Carolina to Tennessee in the 1700s, moved to Texas at the end of the 1800s, and my branch came West at the beginning of the 1900s. I've hit a stone wall prior to the early 1700s, can't find the parents of my 5G-Grandfather, Nathaniel Bivens Sr.
