I have been doing research since 1992. My surnames are Mechling/Macklin,McGowan, Truax(just started this one), Comstock, Newbre/Newberry, DePalma,Mignacco, DePaolo, Shafer(this is my BRICK WALL!, Kronk/Crunk.
Mechilng/ Macklin is Germany, PA, OH, IN, MI 1728 to present.
Kronk is Germany to PA, OH, IN 1600's to present.
Comstock England to CT,MA, NY, MI 1600's to present if can prove name change to 1000.
Newbre MA to NY,MI,CA 1700's to present.
DePalma Italy to Canada to MI 1850 to present.
Mignacco Italy to Canada
DePaolo Italy to PA, NY
McGowan,Truax PA, OH,IN
Shafer, Portugal to MI, my brick wall! He came, as family legend has it, on a boat by himself, bare foot with only the clothes on his back, at the age of twelve. Was adopted by a farmer, thus the name Shafer which is German, in Reading, MI. We were told he came from the caves of Spain. But, in Federal census, his son says he was from Portugal; so I'm not sure where he was from either.
