Greetings Fellow Searchers,

My greatest genealogical ambition is to trace my Lucas ancestors to their beginning in North America. Willis Lucas and Nancy Unknown Lucas appear in the 1860 census, Russel County, AL, across the river from Columbus, GA. They were both born in GA, Willis about 1815 and Nancy about 1825, and were married about 1845. Both her parents and his mother were born in GA but his father was born in NC. Many descendants have darker reddish-brown skin color and family history speaks of Indian ancestry. I am beginning to believe the Indian blood, if there is any, comes from a Melungeon heritage. There are indications from recent research that indicate the possibility. With the earliest known ancestor being born in NC and the family's "untraceable appearance" this is certainly possible.

Willis (possibly William)and Nancy along with several members of their family moved from Midway, Bullock, AL in 1880-1 to Leon County, TX. A daughter, Betty and husband Romulus Traylor were included. The oldest son James stayed in AL and is well accounted for around Troy, Pike, AL.
