John Brooks born 1837 Pennsylvania on census records indicates father from Holland and mother from France. John is found on the 1860 census of Giles Tennessee working as a tailor and records indicate that in earlier years he was "bound out" to learn that trade.

In that year of 1860 he married Roxanna Permilia Smith, daughter of Caroline Bond and Thomas Smith in Tennessee and then had a son named John, before moving to Texas.

Roxanna had several children with John before he died of Tuberculosis and she moved back to Tennessee to marry Dr. Crittendon Smith.

Her son John Brooks then married Annie Clark Ballard and had only one child, names James Edgar Brooks. Annie was the daughter of James Cal Ballard and Willie "Dora" Craig of Tennessee. John worked for the railroad and his family was transferred to Alabama.

In Montgomery Alabama James E Brooks married Susie Mae Cooper, the daughter of Sarah Elizabeth Carter and Levi Benjamin Cooper.

Levi was the son of Sarah F. Lee and Charner P. Cooper of Chambers County Alabama. Charner served in the Civil War and was the son of Andrew Cooper and "Alsey" of South Carolina. Sarah was the daughter of Malinda Phillips of Georgia and Elijah Lee of South Carolina. Elijah may have served in the War of 1812 and purchased his land in Chambers County from a Creek Indian.

Susie Mae Cooper Brooks' son was James Edgar Brooks Jr born 1925. He married Mary Ella Thornton, daughter of Bessie Mae Hood and Milton Elijah Thornton. Milton's parents were George Thornton and Mary Angeline Partridge, an indian woman of Georgia, all buried in Elmore County Alabama.

Bessie's parents were Ella Olivia Baxley and L W Hood ( Lee Wesley? ) - Ella's parents were Louisa Miranda Holt and James Hardie Baxley, a civil war soldier.
