The McElrea family could be from Scotland, but the first known records are in Ulster, County Tyrone, in the townland of Dunmullen and in or around the town of Newtownstewart. One branch is known to have moved to Ballymena, County Antrim. Others have been found in England, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
The name is sometimes confused with McElroy, but is a different group. Sometimes it is found spelled McIlrea, McElray, McIlray.
