Tunstall Ferguson

I have been researching the ancestors of John Henry Craghead and his wife Martha Jane Ferguson of Virginia. Most of my time as been spent on Martha's father Tunstall Ferguson of Pittsylvania Virginia. To date, I have found the following information.

Tunstall Ferguson married Mary Martin, father unknown mother Susie Martin about 1818. Martha Jane Ferguson was born in 1819. Her mother died before 1822, when Tunstall married Susanna Woodson in Pittsylvania, in 1822. Tunstall Ferguson was listed as an heir of John Worsham in 1823, Pittsylvania Account book. John Worsham named his sister Michel Ferguson in his will of 1813. Tunstall was listed on the tax records of Pittsylvania until 1838, when he apparently moved to Rockingham County, North Carolina. He is on the census of 1840 in Rockingham County as T. Ferguson. He appears again in 1850 as Teenstall Foggerson (index of Ancestry.com) His widow, Susan Ferguson appears in 1860, living with Julius Ferguson and James A. Ferguson. Tunstall gifted land to Eliza, Letty, Meed, James and Julius Ferguson in 1842. Julius Ferguson married Mary Paterson in 1862, and died at Gettsyburg on July 3, 1863.

Tunstall parents are likely Michel Worsham and Robert Ferguson. Robert Ferguson, as guardian of Asa Pruitt's heirs was also listed as receiving a portion of the estate of John Worsham. Robert's daughter Tabitha Ferguson married Asa Pruitt in 1809, and it appears that both her husband and she died leaving four children about 1817. Robert Ferguson married Besheba Newbill in 1818 and had seven children with her. Robert served in the Revolutionary War and died in April 1850. His pension application says he was born in 1861 in Halifax County.

In Robert's pension application of 1832, Joseph Ferguson appeared as a witness to his service. In Pittsylvania records, Robert is closely associated the Joseph as neighbors and on the Tax lists. Other Fergusons closely associated with Robert were Covington, Lucy Ferguson, and in the early Tax Lists an older Joseph Ferguson, constable, who disappears from the Tax Lists in 1797.

Joseph Ferguson, Benjamin Ratliff and John Lumpkins all bought land together about 1805. Benjamin Ratliff married a Sally Ferguson about 1792, Rhody Ferguson married Harrison Lumpkins about 1795 and is listed as the Daughter of Joseph Ferguson.

From these records I have made the following surmises:

Joseph Ferguson,Constable had the following children;

Joseph Ferguson Robert Ferguson Covington Ferguson Sally Ferguson Rhodey Ferguson

A Lucy Ferguson appears on the Tax Lists in 1800, on Census records of 1820, 1830. born about 1775, son John, daughter Patsy married William Dix, 1811, Robert Ferguson, Bondsman. She is a neighbor of the above sons. I propose that she might be a sister-in-law to Robert or younger wife of Joseph Ferguson, constable.
