Darrel was born in Charleston, West Virginia. His parents were Arvey Priscilla Smith and William Rexford Patton. He was the father of four children; Brett Darrel Patton, Lane Madison Patton, Jessica Lynn Patton Sutton, and Derry Shane Patton.

Darrel served as a military policeman in the Korean conflict. He retired from the Charleston Fire Department after 20 years of service.
