History of Clinton County, Iowa, 1976. Clinton County Historical Society 1978; LDS #977.767 p. 362 - John M. Stich, b. 13 June 1842, Bavaria, attended art schools in Europe, came to US, settled first in Ohio, where he taught drawing and German, painted portraits, and married. Came to Clinton 13 June 1875, founded the Art School of Clinton, located on the second floor of the building that occupied the northwest corner of 5th Avenue South and 2nd Street. Taught drawing from casts and life models, perspective drawing, and painting; young students came from as far as New York to study with him.
