Transcript

Henry Willis appears in a number of land transactions, recorded in the period from 1781 to 1785. In two cases these are properties that Henry is acquiring. In other cases he is mentioned in the land description as a neighbor. In most of the entries he is listed in the chain of assignment for the property. One of these chains dates back to a (nominal) settlement date of 1767, which is probably a typographic error in the transcription. In any case, we can not infer very much about how early Henry might have been present in the area from these chains. One entry in 1784 identifies a property owner "A. Willis", which is probably a typographical error for "H. Willis". The "A. Willis" could represent a person independent of Henry Willis; if so it is not likely to represent either Amos Willis or Abner Willis, both of whom were present in the area by 1795 when they begin to appear in tax records. Census records suggest that they would have been too young in 1784 to have owned property.
