According to Source:Smith, Elsdon Coles. New Dictionary of American Family Names, Rice is of Welsh origin, a descendant of Rhys meaning "ardor" or "a rush". Source:Hodges, Patrick. Dictionary of Surnames (1998) provides some additional information, that Rhys arose from Rīs which was "one of the most common of the (Old Welsh) personal names", meaning "Fiery Warrior".
