Origins of the Name

The Russian name "Bogdonoff" (or "Bogdanov") is derived from the male given name "Bogdan" which means "God-given." Bogdonoff was frequently given to children born outside of married relationships as well as to foundlings. Source: Origin and Meaning of Molokan Names

From a genealogy perspective, this would make it very difficult to trace lines back beyond a certain time.

I have a theory-- and that's all it is-- that Jewish people with the name "Bogdonoff" may have chosen that name when they were required by law to take a surname. (Prior to the 19th century, Jews did not use surnames. [check this]) If Jews considered themselves "chosen by God" or "God's chosen people," then selecting a word that meant "God-given" might be a particular appropriate choice of surname. Bogdonoffs in the United States

  1. Person:Benjamin_Bogdonoff_(1) emigrated from Russia/Poland, initially to England abt. 1885, and then to Massachusetts abt 1895. His wife and first few children followed shortly; more children were born in the U.S.. They settled in Lowell, Massachusetts. The family was initially Jewish, but not all branches remained so.
  2. A number of Bogdonoffs were Molokan and settled in Northern California.
