[edit] Bernoulli Family
The Bernoulli family of Basel was a patrician family, notable for having produced eight mathematically gifted academics who, among them, contributed substantially to the development of mathematics and physics during the early modern period. The Bernoullis were a family of traders and scholars from Basel, Switzerland. The Bernoulli family has produced many notable artists and scientists, in particular a number of famous mathematicians in the 18th century. The earliest known Bernoulli was one Leon (or Lion, d. 1561), a medical doctor in Antwerp, Flanders. His son Jacob (d. 1583) was the head of the Lutherans in Antwerp until 1570, when he was forced to flee to Frankfurt am Main due to the persecution of Lutherans in Flanders under the duke of Alba. With his second wife Francina Cocx of Maastricht, wiwod of Jan Haecx (d. 1615) he had 17 children. Jacob and his son Nicolaus worked as spice merchants in Frankfurt. Nicolaus' son Jakob (1598-1634) became a citizen of Basel in 1622 and is the founder of the Bernoulli family in that city. Jakob's son Nicolaus (1623–1708) was the father of Jacob Bernoulli (1654-1705) and Johann Bernoulli (1667–1748), the first generation of prominent mathematicians of the Bernoulli family.
