Source talk:Scotland. Census Returns of Scotland for 1841

Source Citation [28 August 2012]

The source citation for this page (and for all pages for the individual enumeration districts) is as follows:

Scotland. Census Office. Census returns of Scotland for 1841. (Salt Lake City, Utah: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1952).

Why should the Genealogical Society of Utah get sole credit as publisher? I accept that they filmed the records in 1952, and it is possible to view copies of these microfilms in Family History Centers and Centres. But it is also possible to view microfilms at the Scottish Record Office in Edinburgh, or to go to the pay website ScotlandsPeople and find the entries there. For several years ScotlandsPeople is the website authorized by the Scottish Record Office to provide their census information (and civil registration and parish register information). It operates on a pay-as-you-view basis.

The original census enumeration booklets from which the FSU made their films probably still exist in Edinburgh. I can confirm they were there and in use by the public in 1981. --goldenoldie 08:57, 28 August 2012 (EDT)
