The title of this source is now incomplete and incorrect (repaired October 10). The previous title is correct. The book is available from Southern Historical Press who holds the copyright. The web site referenced is not readable in Firefox and is probably in violation of copyright. --Mstewart 08:05, 10 October 2009 (EDT)
- I wondered about that copyright issue. But they don't say they took the info from the book - and perhaps they got it from the original data?? I have no way to know. If you think the reference to that site should be removed, feel free to do so.
- I did change the Source title by referring to Help:Source page titles. The current convention for Source titles says if the book has an author, his last name goes first, then first name and then the shortened title.
- "The page title should include only the "main" title (which usually is briefer). If the source has a lengthy subtitle, omit it from the source page title under most circumstances, or unless the remaining title is not useful. Enter the subtitle in the separate "Subtitle" field on the source page itself."
- So the first section of the title of the book should be listed in the title window and the subtitle in the subtitle window. I thought it was redundant; but if all of that was actually part of the title, then please post the subtitle part into the subtitle window. Would you do that for me? I understand the directions but the subtitle is the "Arranged Alphabetically ..." part. I have revised the source to include the whole title and added more repositories (King's book is widely available). I also removed the reference to the Stafford County VaGenWeb site and have emailed them inquiring about their source. It appears to be King's book but they have used it without attribution.
I'm curious about your listing Mary Ball Museum & Library as a repository. Do you live nearby (I do)? --Mstewart 08:05, 10 October 2009 (EDT)
- No, I am not located close to the Museum. The information that the book is available at their genealogical library was given to me by Craig Kilby who contributed the list of marriage references that I posted to the Northern Neck, Virginia Research Guide. This book was on his list and I was linking to the book from the guide page. (That's also why I didn't know enough about the title & subtitle; I knew only what was on his list.) --Janiejac 11:34, 10 October 2009 (EDT)
- Do you feel the page should be renamed? I have now combined the dupe sources, but I can also rename the page to include the full title. The full title appears correctly in the Title field on the source page, but the name of the Source page is still the shortened title. Just wondering for clarity sake if it is easier to have a shorter PAGE name or if there are other similar titles that cause confusion, or what the correct preference is? - I think the page title is fine. BTW I checked the FamilySearch listing and it appears that the title field is ok. If ever you lose one, Library of Congress should have it. --Judy (jlanoux) 14:17, 28 January 2010 (EST)
