Introduction

"Henry Van Schaack (1736-1823), a member of the fourth generation of his family in America, was associated with prominent New Yorkers and New England men of the Revolutionary era. Though ever a Hudson Valley Dutchman, he reached far beyond the bounds of his native town to engage in trade and to return to the town enlarged cultural views. His personal and family history have an important place in the history of Columbia County."
