Description taken from AmericanAncestors: The records held in this collection refer to the statewide index of vital records maintained by the Division of Vital Records Administration. Town clerks were required to send copies of vital records to the state beginning in 1866, although participation was limited until the Bureau of Vital Records was established in 1905. The town clerks then extracted historical vital record information to update the files at the state level, although some records were never reported. The original vital records are still held at the town level.
