The NEHGS created the Early Families of New England Project to produce sketches regarding each family found in New England before 1700. It uses Torrey's index as a guide, but also plans to treat documented nonwhite and non-Protestant couples as well.

The project intends to pick up where the Great Migration Study Project leaves off. Generally this means all couples that migrated 1641 or later, plus people who immigrated earlier but were for some reason not fully treated by Great Migration. The first phase of the project captures those who married before 1640, but were not/will not be treated by Great Migration.
