Notes

This article is primarily a transcription of a narrative left by Col. William Martin, son of General Joseph Martin, an early settler in Southwest Virginia, and Revolutionary War soldier. William was a young boy during much of the Revolution, but given his father's role in the area, provides excellent testimony based on the recollection of his father and his friends. The introduction to the narrative, by the editors, provides considerable background information on the narrative, and the life of William Martin and his father. The version presented here is thought to be the original narrative, though Redd's "Life of Wilburn Waters" makes use of a copy of this work.
