Historic Cemeteries

In 1995 a survey was conducted to record all markers and graves found on Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base and Camp Mackall. Twenty-seven abandoned historic cemeteries and 23 memorial markers were recorded. The survey information was compiled in a document published by Fort Bragg and distributed to local libraries, schools, genealogical societies, families, and individuals. Several hundred copies have been distributed throughout the local area and across the country, primarily to descendants of those individuals buried in the cemeteries. A presentation was made to the local genealogical society and an interview segment was filmed for the public television program “North Carolina Now.” Additionally, the survey information is listed on many genealogical and county history web pages. The Cultural Resources staff collects and provides family history information and photos so that they may be able to provide this information to other family researchers.
