Thornton le Beans is a village and civil parish which has been since 1974 in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is on the A168 road and 3 miles south of Northallerton.

The town's odd name is derived from the common place name 'Thornton', meaning a farm with thorn bushes. This farm had beans grown upon it. In 1534 it was called Thornton-in-Fabis, the Latin for Thornton le Beans.

end of Wikipedia contribution

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Thornton le Beans was located in Northallerton Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ancient parish of North Otterington in the Allerton Wapentake. Northallerton was also responsible for part of the township or was responsible for the whole township at a different time. The duplication is found in A Vision of Britain through Time, but not the reason for it. The civil parish was in the Northallerton Registration District.
