A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of St. Mary Church from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"MARYCHURCH (ST.), a parish in Bridgend [registration] district, Glamorgan; near the river Ddaw, 2 miles S by E of Cowbridge [railway] station. Post town: Cowbridge. Acres: 727. Real property: £746. Population: 119. Houses: 30. The property is all in one estate. Remains exist of a castle, built in the 11th century, by Robert St. Quintin. The parish is a meet for the Cowbridge harriers. The living is a rectory, annexed to the rectory of Llandongh, in the diocese of Llandaff. The church is good."

The parish of St. Marychurch (Llanfair in Welsh) was part of Cowbridge Rural District of Glamorgan, Wales, from 1894 until 1974. It is now in the County Borough of Vale of Glamorgan. It was bounded by the civil parishes of Llanblethian on the north, St. Hilary and Llancarfan on the east, Flemingston on the southeast, and Llanmaes and Llanmihangel on the west. Llandough is a hamlet in the parish.

Research Tips

  • GENUKI on Glamorgan Lots of leads to other sources and descriptions of former parishes.
  • The FamilySearch Wiki on Glamorgan has recently been updated (early 2016) and looks remarkably like Wikipedia. Their map "Glamorgan Parish Map.jpg" enlarges to show all the original parishes. The sub-section "Parishes of Historic Glamorgan" lists all the parishes of Glamorgan and the newer preserved counties and principal areas in both English and Welsh. (Currently this website is still under construction.)
