Sonkajärvi (; formerly known as Rutakko) is a municipality of Finland. It is located in Northern Savonia region, north of Kuopio. The municipality has a population of[1] and covers an area of of which is water.[2] The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. The coat of arms of Sonkajärvi is inspired by the many watermills in the region, which the picture of the water wheel refers to, and the slash-and-burn cultivation of the past, which the flames on top of the wheel refer to. The coat of arms was designed by Ahti Hammar, and the Sonkajärvi municipal council approved it at its meeting on July 15, 1954.
