Shouldham Thorpe is a civil parish in Norfolk, England. It covers an area of 5.87 km2 (2.27 sq mi) and had a population of 157 in 66 households at the 2001 UK census, the population increasing to 165 at the 2011 UK census. Its church is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk.

The parish is west (slightly southwest) of the parish of Shouldham. Shouldham Thorpe in 1900 had no evident settlements outside of the manors of which there had been three: Shouldham Thorpe, Foston, and Russells and Butts.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Shouldham Thorpe from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"SHOULDHAM-THORPE, a parish in Downham [registration] district, Norfolk; 3¾ miles E by N of Stow [railway] station, and 4½ NE of Downham-Market. Post town: Downham. Acres: 1,430. Real property: £1,999. Population: 298. Houses: 60. The manor belongs to Sir T. Hare, Bart. The living is annexed to Shouldham. The church is good; and there are two Methodist chapels."

Research Tips

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
