Shifnal is a small town in Shropshire, England. It has a railway station on the Shrewsbury-Wolverhampton Line and is near to the M54 motorway. It comes under the Bridgnorth district of Shropshire and The Wrekin constituency. A major trading route between London and the North, (why it has so many pubs) and today the much larger and nearby town of Telford continues to provide the pubs, restaurants and hotels with patronage. Elizabeth I sent money to rebuild the town when it burnt to the ground in 1591. In this fire virtually everything was destroyed except the Anglican Church, St. Andrews, and Old Idsall House at the foot of the church. Many local inhabitants mistakenly believe that Shifnal was a favourite of Charles Dickens and the buildings in his book "The Old Curiosity Shop" were based on those in the town. There is no historical evidence to prove this claim. When the FA School of Excellence was based at nearby Lilleshall, the local Secondary School (Idsall School) had some future England International Footballers such as Michael Owen & Andy Cole as pupils.
