Pinwherry is located 13km (8 miles) south of Girvan where the River Stinchar and the Duisk Burn meet. The ruins of Pinwherry Castle, which was a stronghold of the local Kennedy family is close to the hamlet.

Today it is merged with another hamlet named Pinmore to form the Pinwherry and Pinmore Community Council within the South Ayrshire Council Area.
