Macduff is a coastal village in the traditional county of Banffshire. It is situated on the east side of Banff Bay, opposite the town of Banff, and it lies on the western end of the parish of Gamrie. The village was originally called Doune (or Down), but was renamed to Macduff in 1783 by James Duff, the 2nd Earl of Fife.
