Lugar was developed as a company village by the Eglinton Iron Company in the 1840s. The row housing built by the company for its employees were replaced by council housing in the 1950s. The iron works closed in 1928 and the population has diminished from 1350 in the hay-day of the works to about 200 today.

William Murdock, the first to make practical use of gas for lighting, was born in nearby Bello Mill in 1754.
