Logan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population was 31,183. Its county seat is Lincoln, Illinois⁶.

History

The first county seat was at Postville. The second county seat was at Mt. Pulaski. In 1856 the county seat was moved to Lincoln, a newly formed town named after Abraham Lincoln, the only town to be named for him before he became President. [1]

Logan County was originally laid out in 13 Precincts: Atlanta, Bowles, Broadwell, Elkhart, Eminence, Lake Fork, Lincoln, Madison, Middletown, Mt. Pulaski, Prairie Creek, Salt Creek, Sugar Creek. We do not know the boundaries of the original precincts or where each one was. Townships were formed along the standard lines under the Northwest Ordinance.

Around 1867 17 Townships were formed from the Precincts: Aetna, Atlanta, Broadwell, Chester, Corwin, East Lincoln, Elkhart, Eminence, Hurlbut, Laenna, Lake Fork, Mt. Pulaski, Oran, Orvil, Prairie Creek, Sheridan, West Lincoln.

Timeline

Notes: The dates are misleading. The courthouse burnt on April 15, 1857. There are no marriage or court records [unless they were contained in a later filed document] prior to that date but some land records were reconstructed and others were held by the federal government. Prior to the official county formation on February 15, 1839, records for activities in Logan County, except for land records, are in the Sangamon County archives at the Illinois Regional Archives Depository, Springfield, Illinois.
