A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Llanthewy Vach (Welsh:Llanddewi-Fach) from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"LLANTHEWY-VACH, a parish in Pontypool [registration] district, Monmouth[shire]; on an affluent of the river Usk, 2¾ miles E by N of Cwmbran [railway] station, and 4½ SW of Usk. Post town: Caerleon, under Newport, Monmouth[shire]. Acres: 1,350. Real property: £1,192. Population: 172. Houses: 33. The property is subdivided. The living is a [perpetual] curacy in the diocese of Llandaff. Value: £77. Patron: Jesus College, Oxford. The church is good."

In 1935 the parish of Llanthewy Vach was abolished to create, along with the neighbouring parish of Llangibby, the parish of Llangybi Fawr.
