Kirkwood is located on the south side of the Southwest Miramichi River, 1.27 km east of Millerton and 3.14 km northeast of Chelmsford in Nelson Parish, Northumberland County. It had a post office 1903-1947 with William Kirk as first postmaster. In 1904 Kirkwood was a farming settlement with 1 post office and a population of 75 and included Cushmans, located 1.5 km east of Millerton. in 1898 Cushmans was a flag station on the Canada Eastern Railway and a farming settlement with a population of 100.
