A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Kinneff from John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles of 1887:
- "Kinneff and Catterline, par., Kincardineshire, 7130 ac., pop. 997; contains Kinneff, hamlet, on the coast, 7½ miles S. of Stonehaven; P.O.; of Kinneff Castle, garrisoned by the English during David Bruce's minority, almost no vestige remains; during the siege of Dunnottar Castle, in the time of the Commonwealth, the Scottish regalia were secretly conveyed to Kinneff, and buried under the flags of the church."
