The parish

Kingussie and Insh is a parish now located in the Highland Council Area, some 15 miles (25 km) southwest of Aviemore and 24 miles (39 km) southeast of Fort Augustus.

Prior to 1975 the parish was located in the old county of Inverness-shire, which was replaced by the Highland Region and in 1996 by the unitary authority named the Highland Council Area.

The parish is very large with an area of 467.9 sq. km (180.6 sq. miles) and includes, in addition to the burgh of Kingussie, the settlements of Insch, Drumguishch, Ruthven, and Newtonmore.

Insh

Insh lies 4 miles (6.5 km) east of Kingussie in the upper valley of the River Spey to the west of the Cairngorm Mountains. The Insh Marshes are one of the most extensive river marshes in the United Kingdom with abundant wetland and woodland birdlife protected by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
